Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion) activity update
Saturday Oct 03, 2015 07:35 AM | DOOR: T
Lava flow field of Piton de la Fournaise's eruption as on 28 Sep 2015(OVPF)
Tremor at Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF)
The eruption continues with little changes overall. The lava flow field gradually expands (and thickens) towards the southeast from the vents, with the most distant flow fronts now being around 2600-2700 m away.
A slight increase in tremor has been noted over the past week, but volcanologists believe that it is probably due to rainwater infiltration. An inversion of the deformation trend has been detected as well: now, the upper part of the central Dolomieu cone seems to have started to deflate, which could indicate a beginning exhaustion of magma supply.

The eruption continues into its second month,- for Piton de La Fournaise's standards this is an unusually long-lived one. Accompanied by stable tremor, effusive activity remains strong and feeds a growing lava flow field that slowly expands towards the east in direction of the Grandes Pentes. ...
Thursday, Sep 03, 2015
The eruption continues at weak intensity. As of yesterday, only one vent, a cone about 20 m high, remained active producing pulsating fountain-like strombolian explosions of bursting lava bubbles that reach 15-20 m height. ...
Thursday, Aug 27, 2015
The eruption that began last Monday continues. Lava output is much lower now (approx 10 cubic meters / second) than in the beginning (30 cu m/s), but more or less stable. ...
Tuesday, Aug 25, 2015
The eruption that started yesterday continues, but only one of several fissures (east of the Rivals crater), that opened last night remains active over a length of 100 m. A small cone has been built at its upper end, approx. 140 m east of Rivals crater. Strombolian activity occurs from this vent, while 3 other vents lower on the fissure continue to produce lava fountains and feed a lava flow that slowly advances towards the Grandes Pentes. ...
Monday, Aug 24, 2015
A new eruption started at the volcano this evening. Following a brief seismic crisis that triggered an eruption alarm, an eruptive fissure opened south of Dolomieu crater at 18:50 local time. ...
