Popocatepetl volcano news & eruption update
Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update: about 2 weak explosions per hour, pulses of weak tremor
Wednesday Aug 22, 2012 10:05 AM | DOOR: T
Small explosions occurred at an average rate of 2 per hour yesterday. CENAPRED recorded short pulses of weak volcanic tremor.
Tuesday, Aug 21, 2012
The level of activity is fluctuating. Between 19-20 Aug, the number of weak explosions has further decreased to only one every 3 hours on average, and increased again to about 1 every hour during 20 Aug. The largest occurred at 07:40 and 19:18 local time and probably produced small ash plumes. No ash fall has been reported. ...
Monday, Aug 20, 2012
Activity of the volcano has decreased again after a strong peak of frequent although small explosions on 18 Aug. During the 24 hours of observation between 11 am on 18 Aug and 11 am on 19 Aug, CENAPRED counted 89 small explosions, but only 5 during the 9 hours between 11:00 and 20:00 yesterday. ...
Sunday, Aug 19, 2012
A sharp increase in activity has been observed at Popocatépetl since yesterday. During 17-18 August, 176 mostly small explosions were observed (compared to values of 10-20 for the previous week), and 74 alone during the following 9 hours, i.e. about 1 every 8 minutes. ...
Friday, Aug 17, 2012
16 weak explosions have occurred during 24 hours between 16-17 Aug, and a 1 km high steam plume rises above the crater.
Thursday, Aug 16, 2012
Visible activity at Popo has decreased, with only 1 week explosion (less than 500 m height of steam and ash plume) every 2-3 hours recently. The summit lava dome is still glowing at night. ...
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
