Popocatepetl volcano news & eruption update
Thu, 8 Oct 2015, 11:05
During 30 September-6 October the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 23-142 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ...meer

CENAPRED reported that during 16-22 September the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 15-89 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ...meer

Glow from Popocatépetl at night during a phase of more vigorous degassing
Activity at the volcano, relatively low at the moment, has remained more or less unchanged. Lava is slowly being extruded in the inner summit crater and occasionally produces small explosions and less vigorous degassing events ("exhalations"). ...meer Lees alle

Ash plume, approx. 2 km tall, from an explosion at Popo this morning and the glow from the active lava dome in its crater (CENAPRED webcam)
The activity at the volcano has remained more or less unchanged over the past months. During the past days, explosive activity has been a bit higher than average, but alert level remains unchanged at Yelled phase 2. ...meer

CENAPRED reported that during 20-26 May the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 40-307 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ...meer Lees alle

Aerial view of Popo's crater on 10 April with the partially collapsed lava dome (CENAPRED)
Activity has remained essentially unchanged. Intermittent small to moderate explosions occur from the volcano's summit crater, where slow magma extrusion continues to accumulate in a moderately viscous, flat dome. ...meer

Incandescence at the summit crater and steam emission from Popocatépetl
Activity at the volcano has remained essentially unchanged, but dropped overall during the past week. ...meer Lees alle

Explosion from Popocatépetl last evening
The activity of the volcano remains at fluctuating, but overall similar levels as during the past months. An increase in tremor yesterday probably corresponded to a phase of active dome growth, accompanied by bright glow visible at the crater and intense degassing and light ash emissions reaching 1500 m height. ...meer Lees alle

CENAPRED reported that a series of explosions at Popocatépetl from 2250 on 24 February to 0345 on 25 February was accompanied by periods of tremor and Strombolian activity which ejected incandescent material as far as 700 m onto the NE and SE flanks. Additional explosions (19) were detected on 25 February. ...meer Lees alle

Glow from Popocatépetl's summit crater
Activity continues essentially unchanged. A small lava dome continues to grow inside the inner summit crater, with glow visible at night. ...meer
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
