Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update
Thursday Dec 18, 2014 16:08 PM | DOOR: TOMPFEIFFER
Steam plume from Popocatépetl this evening (CENAPRED webcam)
SO2 plume from Popo yesterday (NOAA)
The volcano's activity remains similar as during the past months. SO2 emissions are elevated.
Multiple explosions on 16 December generated ash plumes that rose 1 km. An explosion at 0259 ejected incandescent material onto the NE flank, less than 200 m from the crater.
Tuesday, Dec 16, 2014
No significant changes in activity have occurred recently. The volcano has occasional small explosions producing steam and ash plumes, and lava continues to arrive and slowly fill the inner summit crater, resulting in glow visible at night.
Thursday, Nov 06, 2014
The volcano remains a little bit more agitated when compared to most of the past weeks. Strong glow at the summit indicates magma arriving in the inner crater to add to the new lava dome. Small occasional explosions and near-constant steam and gas emissions accompany this process. ...
Wednesday, Nov 05, 2014
The volcano's activity remains essentially unchanged. A new lava dome is slowly growing in the inner summit crater and produces glow at night and occasional small explosions. ...
Thursday, Oct 30, 2014
Overall, the volcano's activity has remained unchanged. Occasional explosions produce ash plumes that rise 1-2 km above the volcano. Yesterday, the volcano was a bit more active and had 5 such eruptions. ...
Thursday, Oct 16, 2014
Activity at the volcano has remained low, with small occasional steam, gas and sometimes ash emissions. Incandescence was observed over the crater during the night. ...
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.

: Germany has a large number of volcanoes - most of them extinct, but the Eifel volcanic field is still potentially active.
Introduction to Plate Tectonics
: The Earth's upper, rigid layer is broken into several plates which are in constant motion to one another. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur as result of these plate boundaries.
