Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update
Tuesday Jul 28, 2015 10:21 AM | DOOR: T
Ash plume, approx. 2 km tall, from an explosion at Popo this morning and the glow from the active lava dome in its crater (CENAPRED webcam)
The activity at the volcano has remained more or less unchanged over the past months. During the past days, explosive activity has been a bit higher than average, but alert level remains unchanged at Yelled phase 2.
Intermittent explosions occur from the summit crater, where lava domes slowly grow until a series of stronger explosions destroy it and a new one grows.

CENAPRED reported that during 20-26 May the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 40-307 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ...
Monday, Apr 13, 2015
Activity has remained essentially unchanged. Intermittent small to moderate explosions occur from the volcano's summit crater, where slow magma extrusion continues to accumulate in a moderately viscous, flat dome. ...
Friday, Apr 03, 2015
Activity at the volcano has remained essentially unchanged, but dropped overall during the past week. ...
Wednesday, Mar 04, 2015
The activity of the volcano remains at fluctuating, but overall similar levels as during the past months. An increase in tremor yesterday probably corresponded to a phase of active dome growth, accompanied by bright glow visible at the crater and intense degassing and light ash emissions reaching 1500 m height. ...
Tuesday, Mar 03, 2015
CENAPRED reported that a series of explosions at Popocatépetl from 2250 on 24 February to 0345 on 25 February was accompanied by periods of tremor and Strombolian activity which ejected incandescent material as far as 700 m onto the NE and SE flanks. Additional explosions (19) were detected on 25 February. ...
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
