Background

An 18 km long SW-NE trending fissure contains more than 40 scoria cones and small stratovolcanoes, many of which are less than 10,000 years old. Lava flows from these vents have reached the shores of the two lakes, and formed irregularly shaped peninsulas.
The only confirmed historical eruption was in 1850 and produced ashfall in the area.
