Sabancaya volcano news & activity updates:

Sabancaya volcano (Peru): vigorous ash eruptions continue

Tuesday Nov 15, 2016 09:01 AM | DOOR: T

Eruption of Sabancaya volcano on 11 Nov 2016
Eruption of Sabancaya volcano on 11 Nov 2016
The new phase of explosive activity, which had started on 6 Nov., continues to produce intermittent, but frequent ash plumes of small to moderate size reaching up to 2000-3000 m height.
Stronger emissions on 11 Nov were followed by ash falls in up to 40 km distance to the northeast, affecting many villages and towns in the Colca Valley, including Cajamarcana, Sallalli, Parjo, Achoma, Lari, Pinchollo, Yanque, Chivay, Coporaque, Ichupampa, Achoma, Tuti, Callalli, Sibayo, Tocra, and Canocota.

It is not entirely clear whether the eruption is magmatic in nature, i.e. caused and driven by the arrival of new magma at the surface or still only phreatic, i.e. the result of overheated steam in response to magma still at depth. The intensity of the current eruptions and geophysical observations favor the first scenario: during 1-7 Nov, an increase in earthquakes typical for the ascent of magma along with an increase in SO2 output (from 400 to more than 7000 tons/day) were observed by monitoring.

INGEMMET noted that it is the first time in Peru's recorded history that two volcanoes, Sabancaya and Ubinas, are active at the same time: the other volcano (Ubinas) had three mild to moderate explosions last Tuesday (8 Nov).
