Sakurajima volcano (Kyushu, Japan) activity update: irregular vulcanian explosions, ash plumes 1.8-3.5 km elevation

The volcano had a series of larger than average explosion yesterday (1 Sep) early afternoon (local time) and early today. VAAC Tokyo reports 4 explosions with ash clouds reaching 2.7-3.5 km altitude within 24 hours.

Only one explosion seems to have occurred in the past 3 days span, at 01:36 am local time yesterday 30 Aug. It was relatively large, though, producing an ash cloud rising to over 3 km altitude.

The volcano remains relatively quiet. There were 2 probably weak explosions yesterday, and none so far today.

Activity seems to be decreasing. Only one relatively small explosion (13:45 UTC today, ash to 1.8 km) was recorded by Tokyo VAAC during the past 2 days.
