The Volcano Adventure Guide: Excellent information and background for anyone wishing to visit active volcanoes safely and enjoyably. The book presents guidelines to visiting 42 different volcanoes around the world.
Sakurajima (also spelled Sakurashima or Sakura-jima, 桜島 in Japanese) volcano in southern Kyushu is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and one of the few that are at present in constant (persistant) activity. Its ongoing typical activity range from strong strombolian to large ash explosions every 4-24 hours.
The volcano is located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km east of the city of Kagoshima with a population of half a million. Sakurajima's eruptive history has been recorded since the 8th century. It has frequently deposited ash on Kagoshima, and due to its explosive potential, considered a very dangerous volcano and closely monitored.
The largest historical eruptions of Sakurajima took place during 1471-76 and in 1914.
Sakurajima volcano (Kyushu, Japan): 3 explosions so far today
Monday Sep 24, 2012 09:55 AM | DOOR: T
After a week of relatively low and infrequent explosions, Sakura-jima has picked up with 3 eruptions during the early hours of today.
The largest at 12:52 h local time produced an ash plume rising to 11,000 ft (3.4 km) and was captured as webcam video by user cubhf137 on youtube:
Sakurajima continues to be at elevated activity levels. Yesterday marked a record of 6 explosions (GMT time frame), the largest of which was at 21:27 GMT (or 06:27 Japan time today) and sent ash to 12,000 ft (3.7 km). 2 moderate explosions have occurred today so far.
After taking some breath for about 24 hours, Sakurajima erupted with 4 relatively strong explosions during the past 24 hours alone. Two of them (this morning at 09:39 and at 18:57 local time) produced ash rising to 11,000 ft or 3.4 km altitude, VAAC Tokyo reports.
Ethiopia and the Danakil: Ethiopia is a very diverse and beautiful country. Thanks to our numerous expeditions to Erta Ale and Dallol and beyond, we have an extensive collection of images showing the volcano's lava lake, the desert, the colorful hot springs of Dallol, the vast salt lakes, camel caravans and more.
Climbing Stromboli volcano: Stromboli provides one of the most remarkable opportunities to watch volcanic eruptions from close: a natural ridge located 150 m above the active vents. A classic and all-time favorite tour by anyone interested in seeing active volcanoes!
