Sakurajima volcano (Japan): ash plume to 20,000 ft (6 km) altitude

An ash plume at 20,000 ft (6 km) altitude was reported this morning at 03:08 GMT (12:08 local time). This would be the largest explosion of the volcano in at least 1 year.

Activity has remained at very high levels, as if the volcano greets the scientific community arriving from all over the world for the 20-24 July IAVCEI conference. A phase of strong activity started last Sunday. Following a week of almost no explosions, a series of relatively strong eruptions has started. On average, 4-5 explosions have occurred per day, with at least 5 stronger ones producing ash plumes to 10-12,000 ft (3-3.6 km) altitude. [meer...]
