Sakurajima volcano news

Sakurajima volcano (Kyushu, Japan): activity remains elevated, 2-4 explosions per day

Ash column (about 3-4 km high) from an explosion of Sakurajima on Tuesday morning
Ash column (about 3-4 km high) from an explosion of Sakurajima on Tuesday morning
Activity at the volcano remains at relatively high levels, similar to what we observed last week. During the past days, vulcanian explosions have been occurring at rates of 2-4 per day, increasing the total number for recorded explosions (*) this year to 32 so far with half of them having occurred during the past 10 days. In addition, the volcano has been showing weak to strong ash emissions most of the time.

(*): The "explosions" counted are being referred to as defined by JMA, who count eruptive events as explosion only when an associated air pressure wave reaches a certain threshold. Passive, although often strong ash emissions do not count in this scheme.
