A small ash explosion occurred yesterday afternoon at the volcano, at 16:44 (local time). It only lasted about 10 minutes and produced a small ash plume rising approx. 500 m. It is the first eruptive activity since the larger explosion on 29 Dec past year, and is likely only a precursor of more violent activity to come.
Seismic activity has been increasing constantly over the past weeks, and clusters of earthquakes have been taking place at shallow (1 km) depth beneath the northern flank, MARN scientists measured. Tremor, indication of internal fluid (magma) movements and/or pressure, has been rising in intensity. As well, increasing values of sulfur dioxide (SO2) degassing suggest that new magma is rising within the volcanic edifice.

Tremor amplitude at San Miguel volcano over the past weeks (MARN)
The volcano has not erupted again, but shows increased signs of unrest. Since late January, the volcano's seismic activity has been rising significantly. MARN detected a swarms of earthquakes at very shallow 1 km depth beneath the SW flank, while a smaller number of quakes occured at approx. 6 km depth beneath the summit of the volcano. Lees alle

Current seismic signal at San Miguel volcano (VSM station, MARN)
No significant changes have occurred, but the authorities warn that another eruption in the near to medium-term future cannot be ruled out. Seismic activity with the presence of volcanic tremor remains at elevated, fluctuating levels. A degassing, SO2-rich plume rises about 150 meters above the crater. ... Lees alle

Chaparrastique (the local name of the volcano) is still restless. SNET reports seismicity at (low) levels similar to before and after the eruption on 30 Dec, and a degassing plume of 100 m height, with a decreasing tendency. However, new eruptions with little or no warning could occur and authorities ask people not to approach the crater. ... Lees alle

Gas plume from San Miguel seen from the ISS on 30 Dec (Image: Rick Mastracchio)
No new explosions have occurred at the volcano of Chaparrastique (San Miguel), but elevated degassing (SO2 flux estimated at about 2800 tons / day) suggests that new magma is still arriving inside the volcano and could lead to new eruptions. ... Lees alle

Eruption plume from today's explosion at San Miguel (photo: La Prensa Grafica)
The new eruption that occurred at the volcano Sunday (29 Dec) morning at 10:50 am local time has so far been an isolated single explosion of vulcanian type (accumulated pressure ejecting the plug in the conduit). Current seismic activity is low, but more activity could follow. ... Lees alle
