Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala): formation of a new lava flow

Activity is dominantly effusive. The new block lava flow that had recently formed on the southern flank of the Caliente dome produces glowing avalanches. The other flows on the SE side remain active as well.

A constant steam plume rises from the dome to an altitude of approx. 3000 m a.s.l. and incandescence is seen at the dome at night.

Strong degassing from the dome and a new blocky lava flow entering the notch at the upper crater rim left by the explosions last week were reported by INSIVUMEH. The new flow produces abundant block avalanches causing a fine ash plume drifting W and SW. [meer...]

In the recent days, Santiaguito has been producing a number of larger-than-average explosions that caused ash fall in the surrounding areas. Ash plumes from these explosions rose 1.5-3.2 km / 5000-10,000 ft above the lava dome and were sometimes accompanied by small pyroclastic flows. ... [meer...]
