Volcano news: Santa Maria (Guatemala)

Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Thursday Mar 14, 2013 15:07 PM | DOOR: T

Light ash fall occurred during the night in the ranches Faro and Florida. The dome continues to show both relatively strong explosive and effusive activity.
Explosions at intervals of 20-30 minutes on average produce ash plumes of 400-800 m height, and contains many incandescent blocks visible at night. Block lava avalanches accompany the effusion of the lava flows on the flanks of the dome.

The dome has been becoming more active, INSIVUMEH details in its latest report. 40-60 small to moderate explosions have been occurring daily, producing a fine ash plume rising about 500-1000 m above the dome. 4 lava flows are active on the flanks of the dome, and produce near-constant avalanches and sometimes small pyroclastic flows. Activity remains essentially unchanged, and overall low. Explosions (1-2 per hour) from the dome produce ash plumes up to about 800 m high, and the viscous block lava flows descending the sides of the dome produce weak to moderate avalanches. [meer...]
