Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala): active lava flow

The volcano continues to feed an active lava flow that passes through a ravine on the SE side of the dome. Its length has reached approx. 3 km, which implies it has been making approx. 30 meters progress per day during the past month.
Steam rising from the lava flow from Santiaguito lava dome yesterday
No significant explosive activity has been noticed recently. Heavy rainfalls have been causing mud flows(lahars).

No explosions were observed since yesterday, but the lava flow at the eastern rim of the Caliente dome remains active, producing rockfalls into the Nima 1 river canyon. Strong degassing is occurring from the dome. [meer...]

Activity seems to have been a bit higher today, as the report of INSIVUMEH's volcano observatory suggests. A moderate explosion was observed this morning, causing light ash fall towards the SW in the area of Finca El Rosario Palajunoj. Activity at the volcano has remained essentially unchanged and been relatively low. A block lava flow remains active from the eastern rim of the Caliente dome, which shows strong degassing and produces occasional small explosions. [meer...]

According to INSIVUMEH, a "very strong and prolonged" earthquake occurred under the volcano this morning at 05:25 local time. Paintings in houses were bouncing and small landslides occurred in steep river bed sides. The earthquake also triggered small avalanches on the steep flanks of the active Caliente lava dome. ...
