Two spectacular, moderately large explosions with associated pyroclastic flows occurred this morning at 07:40 and 08:45 local time.

The eruption columns from the vertical explosions rose approx. 2.5 km above the crater and were accompanied by pyroclastic flows that descended on the southern slope of the volcano, reaching 2.5 and 3 km distance, respectively. No additional damage in the (already devastated and evacuated) area was reported.
Explosions and pyroclastic flows like these have occured infrequently during the past months, often in clusters that follow phases of apparent calm. Overall, the volcano's effusive/explosive eruption has been continuing with no significant changes overall during the past years: viscous magma continues to rise to the summit crater, it accumulates there as a lava dome and forms unstable, over-spilling lava flow tongues.
Occasionally, trapped gasses inside the upper conduit are liberated in small to moderately large explosions. In addition, when large enough masses of lava have accumulated in the summit area, parts of the lava dome / lobes collapse into hot avalanches (pyroclastic flows). Often, both processes occur together and mutually trigger each other (pressure release by collapse vs sudden instability caused by an explosion leading to collapse).
