Eruption updates & news from Stromboli:

Stromboli volcano (Italy), activity update: intracrater lava flow

Thursday Oct 21, 2010 21:39 PM |

As observed during our ongoing tour to Stromboli and Etna, the activity of Stromboli is characterized by high magma level inside the conduits and the the activity is concentrated at the NW and NE vents. The latter shows typical, mild strombolian eruptions at intervals of 15-20 minutes, throwing bombs to 50-150 m height. The NW vent, apparently filled with fresh lava to the top, is constantly spattering and lava is overflowing from near the top of the cone around the vent, creating an intra-crater lava flow, about 2-4 meters wide and 40m long, traveling west towards the center of the crater terrace. According to information from the mountain guides the flow must have started this morning (20 Oct 2010) or during the previous night. The monitoring team on Stromboli has not detected deformation of the Sciara del Fuoco or other signs that this event might be a predecessor of a possible new lateral eruption on the Sciara itself.
