As night falls, one can see strong glow from the craters and continuing frequent, typical strombolian explosions of medium to large size (but within the levels of activity often observed at the volcano).
A weakly alimented lava flow is present on the upper Sciara del Fuoco. Today's larger blast seems to have removed all or most of the large cinder cone that had dominated the northern crater area (see images before / after attached for comparison). The blast itself was likely the consequence of a gas-rich surge of fresh magma that quickly rose and exploded at the vents. Immediately before, its rise had pushed the overlying magma column out, which explains the lava overflow observed before the eruption.
Now, the configuration of the vents can be expected to have changed significantly, probably widened, and allowing magma to reach the surface more easily.
An important question to see will be whether the supply rate of magma will remain elevated in the near future, likely to cause continued lava flows and perhaps additional explosions.
Access to the summit area is closed until further notice.
