Tungurahua volcano news & eruption updates:

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador), activity update: increase in frequency and size of explosions, evacuations

Monday Jan 07, 2008 14:11 PM |

Tungurahua volcano's activity has been increasing over the past days. The Ecuadorian Insititute of Geophysics (IG) reports an increase in the frequency and size of ash explosions. IG interprets the present style of activity as related to constant degassing in an open-conduit system filled with vicsous magma. Sronger explosions alternate with near-constant emissions of gas and ash.
According to news articles at least 1,000 local residents have been evacuated due to the intensified activity of the volcano in Ecuador.
