Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador): decreasing activity
Sunday May 03, 2015 23:12 PM | DOOR: T
Explosion at Tungurahua on 27 April 2015 (IGEPN)
Intermittent small explosions and ash emissions continue to occur from the volcano. However, its overall activity has been decreasing during the past weeks and the scenario of a larger eruption, which had been expected in early April, has been becoming more unlikely now.
Between 10-16 April, a seismic swarm of more than 3000 earthquakes occurred within 1-3 km below the summit of the volcano. This, as well as increased SO2 emissions and inflation of the NE flank of the cone suggested the arrival of a new batch of magma, which could have lead to a more intense phase of activity as on many past occasions. During late April, seismic activity decreased and the inflation switched to deflation, while gas emissions remained at similar levels.
It seems that the intrusion stopped for now and released its energy gradually by degassing and a number of smaller explosions.

Monday, Apr 20, 2015
Over the past week, activity has remained at moderate levels with small to medium-sized ash emissions, but no larger explosions so far. The largest occurred on the afternoon of 15 April, when ash plumes rose to up to 3 km above the volcano.

Intermittent mild explosive activity with ash emissions continues at the volcano. ...
Wednesday, Apr 08, 2015
The volcano entered a phase of increasing activity again. New ash emissions, tremor episodes and increased SO2 output occurred during the past days and suggest that a new pulse of magma is on its way. This could lead to a new, possibly intense eruptive phase in the near future. ...
Wednesday, Mar 04, 2015
A new phase of activity has started at the volcano. So far, surface activity has been low, with minor explosions and steaming, but it is likely that this activity will increase in the near future. ...
Thursday, Sep 25, 2014
Activity at the volcano remains at moderate to high levels, consisting of strombolian and small vulcanian explosions. During the past week, ash plumes have been rising 2-3 km above the volcano.+ ...
