It is now clear that this is a major eruption, same as in 2000. VAAC reports have been revising the ash column height upwards and may continue to increase.

Satellite imagery shows a large circular cloud over the volcano, indicating that this is most likely a full-scale subplinian eruption, the world's first since Calbuco, Chile in 2015.

UPDATE:
In the meanwhile, more images and details have appeared about the eruption. As the attached picture posted on twitter shows, before the onset of the larger eruption, the volcano started a phase of intense lava fountaining (a paroxysm) in the morning of 26 June (local time). Reportedly, this was also accompanied by several lava flows.
Fortunately, this phase of activity already triggered evacuations of the villages near the volcano. A few hours later, the main explosive phase seems to have started at around 04:30 UTC (14:30 local time), quickly developing into the large umbrella cloud shown on the satellite images.
This cloud reached a diameter of 150 km as the sun set over the area, suggesting that the eruption was still continuing at this time.
