Etna volcano (Italy), activity update: new explosive activity at SE, collapse on flank of SE cone, new eruptive fracture SE of SE crater near Belvedere
After its explosive phases on 9 Nov and 10-11 Nov, Etna had been relatively quiet over the past days. This changed again dramatically today (16 Nov):
A new explosive and effusive phase started at around 6 am local time, when tremor level rose and SE crater started strombolian activity quickly changing from weak to strong intensity.
From around 9:20 am, an dense ash plumes were again observed from SE crater drifting to the ENE at around 4000 m a.s.l. As it turned out, they were caused by large collapses on the S-SE flank of the cone, causing small debris flows covering the aera E-SE at the base of the cone.
In th area of collapse, near Belvedere, a new effusive vent also had opened. Its flows have cut the paths leading to the 2800 m vent The new flow is directed into Valle del Bove.
A small new lava flow emerged from the 3050 vent, which had last been active during the previous two episodes from 9-11 Nov.
At 9:45 local time, the 3050 m vents in the lower flank of Bocca Nuova became active again as well and a new lava flow started from here, overlapping those already cooling from the previous episodes. At the beginning, this activity was again accompanied by spattering from the vent(s).
The 2800 m vent (seemingly independant from all other activities) continues to emit a more or less stable lava flow that continues inside its tube until about 2400 m elevation in the upper Valle del Bove near the Monti Centinari.

We gladly announce two new study&walking tours we can offer you in Italy: one to the Bay of Naples from 8-15 April and a two-weeks tour of the Eolian Islands from 6-18 May 2007. Both tours will be guided by our Italian geologist Marta who is a true insider in both areas.[meer...]
Because of the recent interesting volcanic activity at Merapi and Semeru volcano on Java, we point to two tours with open spaces for last-minute individual bookings:... [meer...]
Due to lack of participants, we decided to cancel the tour to North Sulawesi and postpone it to 2007. As an interesting alternative, we can offer a special trekking tour in Java and Bali from 5-20 August instead. There are two open spaces available.[meer...]
