Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion), activity update: new major collapse at the summit crater, lava continues to flow
On 12 April at 15h05 local time, a second larger collapse took place at the summit crater Dolomieu. The new impressive pit crater has cut the area next to the pit crater Bory, which is now no longer supported and itself at risk of collapsing into Dolomieu.
Lava continues to flow from the eruptive fissure at 500 m elevation. Tremor is at low levels, but earthquakes, probably related to internal collapse and gravity adjustments, continue to rattle the summit.
On 14 April, tremor increased and lava fountains up to 100 m high from the 500 m fissure vent were feeding fluid lava flows on the lower slope.
