New Zealand's 2 currently active volcanoes dominate the volcano-related headlines of news in the world:
A new eruptive phase started on White Island this morning with ash venting from the Crater Lake, where a new cone is beeing built, GNS scientists observed.
NZ scientists could make an overflight of the eruption area of Tongariro volcano in New Zealand and take photos of eruption vents located at the Upper Te Mari craters. They observed numerous ballistic impacts in up to 2 km distance and a debris flow deposit from the violent, probably phreatic eruption on Monday.
At present the volcano is relatively calm, but eruptions could resume any time.
Some brief notes from the rest of the volcano world:
Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala) shows increased activity since last night.
Popocatépetl in Mexico: A moderately strong explosion occurred yesterday 7 Aug at 17:58 local time and produced a steam and ash column rising 4 km. Glow from the volcano at night remains strong, suggesting that the lava dome is growing.
Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): INGEOMINAS records pulses of tremor and reports degassing and ash venting, and maintains the eruption warning ORANGE.
Etna (Italy): Tremor is low this morning and probably, explosive activity in the Bocca Nuova crater is weak as well.
Since yesterday, Stromboli has calmed down somewhat, judged from the weaker seismic signal showing fewer explosions than during most of the past week.
Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): An ash plume rising to 6000 ft (1.8 km) altitude was observed on 6 and 7 Aug, indicating that intermittent ash explosions continue at the remote volcano.
Sakurajima volcano: Vulcanian-type explosions continue at various frequency (0-2 per day) and intensity. Activity has dropped to lower levels than during most of the previous months. VAAC Tokyo reports explosions for 6 and 7 Aug, but none for 3-5 Aug, suggesting that the volcano sometimes pauses even several days between eruptions.
