Volcanic activity world-wide 12 Aug 2012: Etna, Stromboli, Katla, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Nevado del Ruiz, Reventador, Tungurahua, Sakurajima, Ambrym, White Island

Sunday Aug 12, 2012 16:55 PM | DOOR: T

Etna volcano (Italy): The tremor signal has stayed calm, but weak strombolian activity or spattering from the vent inside the Bocca Nuova is probably continuing. Interestingly, a few relatively large quakes (around M3) have occurred on the NE flank near (or on?) the Pernicana fault this morning and it will be interesting to monitor the NE rift zone in the coming months.

Judged from the seismic signals, the frequency and size of explosions at Stromboli is at high levels today.

At Katla volcano in Iceland, a slight increase in number of quakes can be noticed.

Popocatépetl in Mexico continues to calm down. Only 3 weak explosions were observed during 9 hours of recent observation. Still, the volcano is emitting a significant steam and gas plume with lots of SO2.

Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala) produced a moderate explosion earlier today at 06:08 local time that rose 800 m above the lava dome and caused light ash fall. The seismograms show lots of activity, most of it probably by continuing rock avalanches on the steep flanks of the dome.
Fuego volcano has some few weak explosions and INSIVUMEH reported a slight advance of the lava flow towards the Taniluyá canyon, accompanied by numerous rock avalanches.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): An increase in gas and steam venting has been observed since 20:15 local time last night. In addition, an earthquake swarm occurred NE of the Arenas crater near the Azufrado ravine and was localized at 4 km depth.

A possible explosion occurred at Reventador volcano in Ecuador, the Washington VAAC reports. If it is ash, it means a new eruptive phase has started at Reventador. Another possibility is that is a storm cloud. So far, there are no other reports about an explosion. In its latest report from yesterday, IG, describes the volcano producing a steam cloud rising about 1 km. The seismic station is currently broken.

Ecuador's most active volcano, Tungurahua volcano remains at moderate levels of activity and produces frequent explosions with gunshot sounds heard around the volcano. Ash reaches elevations of 5-6 km (VAAC reports) and ash fell in the Chacauco sector. (IG)

Activity at White Island has remained at similar low levels to yesterday. Volcanic tremor remains weak and a very low altitude plume of steam and gas with intermittent minor ash is being emitted. (GeoNet)
Almost a week after its news-breaking short but violent explosion, Tongariro volcano has not had much new activity to be reported.

Further to the north, an impressive SO2 plume is drifting SE from Ambrym volcano, showing that there is lots of fresh and happily degassing lava inside its active craters.

Still further north, the usual 7,000 ft elevation ash plume from Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) was spotted by VAAC Darwin today as well.

Sakurajima volcano seems to have had only one, probably weak explosion during the past 48 hours, at 10:30 GMT earlier today.
