Volcanic activity world-wide 14 August: Tungurahua, Etna, Long Valley, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Nevado del Ruiz, Sotará, Bagana, Batu Tara, Sakurajima

Ash-rich strombolian explosions are spotted from Bocca Nuova at Etna volcano (Italy). Tremor is low.

A small swarm of earthquakes could be noted at Long Valley caldera during 12-13 Aug About 30 (very small mostly below M1) quakes occurred clustered in an area near Mammoth Lakes in the W part of the caldera. However, such small swarms are quite normal for Long Valley and their number is not a significant increase of activity.

Activity remains weak at Popocatépetl in Mexico, but the number of (small) explosions been increasing, with now 1-2 weak events per hour. The most significant one was at 15:47 local time. After 22:00 local time last night, some increased activity might be visible on the seismic plot.

Fuego volcano: Activity has not changed much at Fuego. 13 weak to moderate strombolian explosions with ash plumes to 200 – 400 meters height, hissing gas venting at intervals of 1-8 minutes, and a 200 m active lava flow shedding constant rock avalanches were reported in the last daily update (note that the previous day, the lava flow was said to have been 300 m long - either the figures are a bit indicative, which is normal, or the flow has decreased a lot since yesterday). The seismogram shows lots of activity as usual.

Santiaguito / Santa Maria (Guatemala): Activity has been higher yesterday with weak to moderate explosions generating plumes to 700-1000 m height which drifted SW. There are 4 active lava flows on the flanks of the cone that produce constant rock avalanches, and a fully saturated seismic signal.

A tremor signal is being recorded at Pacaya volcano, but apart from fumaroles degassing, there is no visible activity.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): No change - steam and ash emissions continue at Nevado del Ruiz at fluctuating intensity and constant tremor is being recorded.
Sotarà volcano: Seismicity visible on the recordings of INGEOMINAS overall decreased during the past week, but showed a strong increase yesterday and then again subsided today.

Tungurahua volcano has seen a strong increase of activity since late last night.

A significant SO2 plume was observed on 12 Aug from Bagana volcano (Bougainville Island, PNG), suggesting an eruption could have occurred that day. Today, the plume is no longer visible.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) produced its daily ash plume detected at 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude.

Sakurajima volcano has had 2 weak - moderate explosions (2.4-3 km ash cloud altitude) during the past 24 hours.

Finally, yesterday's report of a possible eruption from Tofua volcano turned out to have been cause by fires on the island by locals during a wild boar chase.

Activity has decreased at White Island. Ash emissions have been lower than in the previous days. Gas measurements showed that all volcanic gases were at levels lower than the previous measurement on August 1. ... [meer...]

Etna volcano (Italy): The tremor signal has stayed calm, but weak strombolian activity or spattering from the vent inside the Bocca Nuova is probably continuing. Interestingly, a few relatively large quakes (around M3) have occurred on the NE flank near (or on?) the Pernicana fault this morning and it will be interesting to monitor the NE rift zone in the coming months. ... Tongariro volcano has remained calm. GNS scientists measured elevated levels of SO2 and other volcanic gasses, which suggests that magma is accumulating beneath the volcano. ... [meer...]

Tongariro volcano in New Zealand has stayed calm. First analysis of the ash confirms that the eruption did not produce any significant amount if at all of fresh magma, and therefore was so-called phreatic. ... [meer...]
