Volcanic activity world-wide 22 August 2012: Tungurahua, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Sotará, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, El Hierro, Havre Seamount

Wednesday Aug 22, 2012 17:18 PM | DOOR: T

Tungurahua volcano has been very active the past days, with continous ash emissions and occasional large explosions producing ash plumes up to 32,000 ft (ca. 10 km) altitude. IG scientists on an overflight observed strombolian activity from the inner summit crater which has filled with fresh lava.
At the time of updating, tremor and seismic activity have decreased a bit again.

Popocatépetl: Small explosions occurred at an average rate of 2 per hour yesterday. CENAPRED recorded short pulses of weak volcanic tremor.

Activity at Fuego volcano has increased. There are 2 lava flows 500 and 600 m long, and more frequent strombolian eruptions ejecting glowing bombs to 100 m height were seen occurring at intervals of 10-15 minutes.

Activity of Santiaguito seems to continue with no major changes. INSIVUMEH has not published reports during the past days due to bad weather, but the seismic signal and webcam suggest that intermittent weak to moderate explosions and block avalanches from the active lava flows on the steep sides of the dome continue.

Seismicity has been on the increase at Sotarà volcano in Colombia. Over the past 7 days, INGEOMINAS registered 151 volcano-tectonic quakes, out of which 15 were of significant size (magnitudes 0-1) and located at shallow depth between 2 and 6 km in an area 0.1-5 km NE from the the summit. Visual observations show no signs of surface activity.
Galeras: Seismic activity has been generally low, with some quakes occurred below the active cone. The alert level remains at yellow.
Another volcano on yellow alert in Colombia, Cumbal volcano, shows slightly increased seismic activity with little changes to the past weeks. Direct observations are difficult due to bad weather.
Nevado del Huila has weak seismic unrest and remains at yellow alert as well.

At El Hierro island, only few more quakes were registered recently (you can check the current quake list). In addition, some deflation of about 2 cm has been registered over the past few days, suggesting that magma is withdrawing from under the island.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) continues to produce ash plumes rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude.

Sakurajima volcano had 2 more weak explosions with ash reaching 2.4 km altitude during the past 24 hours.

The pumice rafts from the recent eruption of Havre Seamount in the Kermandec archipelago (discovered 9 Aug) are spreading across the ocean, currently over an area of 270,000 km2 / 100,000 sq. miles of the Pacific Ocean. No new pumice has been observed, which could indicate that the eruption has waned or is over.
To read more, have a look at the recent fascinating post about the fate of the pumice and pumice rafts in general published on the Eruptions Blog.

Tungurahua volcano emits a near constant steam and ash plume rising on average 1.5 km with peaks of up to 4 km above the crater. This activity produces significant ash fall in areas west of the volcano. Intermittent explosions throw bombs to 500 m height and up to 1.5 km radial distance. A strong SO2 plume can be seen on satellite imagery. ... [meer...]

The new earthquake swarm that started on 15 August at El Hierro islan continues in the same area at aroud 10 km depth beneath the western El Golfo coast, but seems to be decreasing. Yesterday, 58 quakes occurred, today so far 18 although this number is likely to rise. Tremor is low to none. ... [meer...]
