A new eruption has started 2 days ago at Karangetang volcano. Lava flows (perhaps pyroclastic flows as well) have approached or reached villages nearby where residents were evacuated.
A strong seismic swarm seems to be occurring at the remote Little Sitkin volcano far out in the western Aleutians, following a period of increased tremor earlier today. At the moment, there are no reports of an eruption, which (if it erupts) will most likely be provided by satellite observations of ash clouds.
Otherwise, there is not much significant news to be report in the volcano world, but here are a few updates collected over the day (as usual, the links lead to more detailed updates):
San Cristobal volcano remained quiet and there is currently only low-energy microseismicity, and weak steaming at the moment, creating a plume of 250-300 m above the crater. The volume of sulfur dioxide emission has dropped to about 1,600 tonnes / day, about half the value measured the previous day.
Telica volcano INETER reports abundant emission of gases, mixed with steam, creating plumes of 100 - 200 meters above the crater rim, and jetting sounds.
Inside the crater, incandescence in two vents is visible and temperature measurements at the fumaroles were 333 deg C on the morning of 10 Sep. Seismic amplitudes (RSAM) are within normal levels, characteristic of an active volcano.
The earthquake swarm near Apoyeque volcano seems to have ceased.
The steam plume from Pacaya volcano and what appears as small quakes and perhaps some tremor have drastically increased. There are no rumblings or other surface activity. INSIVUMEH mentions that a likely cause is increased groundwater infiltration causing some phreatic activity.
The lava flow at Fuego volcano has reappeared as the activity of the volcano slowly continued to increase after a short period of calm.
Santiaguito volcano remains relatively calm. There were no recent explosions reported, only strong degassing generating a steam plume rising 250-300 m and weak block avalanches from the lava dome.
Popocatépetl had fewer exhalations than previously, but there are some tremor pulses and small quakes at the volcano.
In El Salvador, San Miguel volcano is showing increased seismic activity.
In Colombia, Nevado Del Ruiz and Galeras have been quiet, while Cerro Machin had another small swarm of quakes yesterday (10 Sep) and then ceased. At the moment, seismicity is again low.
A strong pulse of volcanic tremor (?) is visible on the current seismograms of Nevado del Huila a few hours ago. There are no reports of eruptions.
Batu Tara had new explosions today to send ash to 7,000 ft altitude.
A stronger than usual explosion seems to have occurred earlier today at Sakurajima volcano at 06:55 GMT. An ash plume reaching 15,000 ft (>4.5 km) was reported by Tokyo VAAC.
The number of earthquakes under El Hierro remains elevated. There were 19 yesterday and 10 today so far. The quakes are mostly in the same area of the western El Golfo Bay at about 10 km depth.
