Volcanic activity world-wide 18 September 2012: Soputan, Sheveluch, Popocatepetl, El Hierro, Little Sitkin, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Batu Tara, Sakura-jima

Tuesday Sep 18, 2012 20:11 PM | DOOR: T

Soputan volcano in North Sulawes had a new explosive eruption this afternoon and produced lava fountains of several hundred meters height and an ash plume rising to 30,000 ft or about 10 km.

Another new explosion occurred at Sheveluch volcano in Kamchatka at 23:19 GMT on 17 Sep. Based on pilot observations, VAAC Anchorage reports an ash plume to flight level 270, i.e. 27,000 ft altitude (about 8 km). The ash plume is moving rapidly to the SE.

The new seismic swarm at El Hierro probably caused by a new magma intrusion seems to be ending. Seismic activity is almost back to the levels before the swarm started 3 days ago. There have been about 10 quakes so far today only, and there is no tremor signal visible.
Compared to the intrusion in late June-early July, this has been a rather small event and we can start watching out for a next one.

Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi has calmed down after its strong eruption on Saturday, but until yesterday afternoon at around 16:40 pm, phreatic explosions were still going on at Lokon's Tompaluan crater. Seismic activity remains high and there is an increased likelyhood of new eruptions, a VSI volcanologist tells a local newspaper.

Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico remains at elevated activity levels. Between 16-17 Sep, the frequency of small explosions peaked with 120 events, i.e. on average 5 per hour and has decreased to 60 during the past 24 hours as stated in the recent CENAPRED report. The larger of the explosions produced small ash plumes. Constant glow above the crater is visible at night.

Little Sitkin volcano in the Aleutians has moderately elevated seismic activity, but there were no new earthquake swarms over the past 2 days.

Fuego volcano, Guatemala has its typical sporadic explosions with ash plumes of 500-900 meters above the crater, sometimes accompanied by rumbling noises and felt shock waves. No lava flows.
Also Santiaguito has been doing the same as during the past days, occasional explosions and block lava avalanches.
Pacaya produces a white steam plume and some elevated seismic activity with tremor pulses and some shallow quakes. Otherwise, the volcano remains calm.

Sakurajima volcano has been quiet with no explosion reported during almost 48 hours. Perhaps it is building up to a larger one.

Also, no new explosions have been identified at Batu Tara during the past 48 hours.
