Volcanic activity world-wide 20 September 2012: Etna, Popocatepetl, Kilauea, Little Sitkin, Fuego, Santiaguito, Tungurahua, Reventador, Batu Tara, Sakura-jima

Thursday Sep 20, 2012 17:23 PM | DOOR: T

During a visit to the summit crater of Etna volcano this afternoon, we could hear deep-seated explosion sounds at intervals of few minutes from the Voragine pit crater, suggesting that some activity is going on deep (several 100 m) within its conduit. Sporadic explosive activity from adjacent Bocca Buova ceased about a week ago according to the Etna mountain guides.

At Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i, the Halema'uma'u lava lake remains active as well as various vents at the floor of Pu'u 'O'o on the rift zone. Lava flows have recently been limited to the area above the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

Popocatépetl volcano remains with about 2 small to medium explosions per hour, the larger of which produce small ash plumes. There is glow visible at night indicating that its lava dome continues its slow growth.

Fuego volcano, Guatemala continues its typical activity at moderate levels, with sporadic explosions ejecting bombs to 200 m and ash plumes up to 1 km height. Shock waves and rumblings accompany the larger explosions, and incandescent material falling back generates small avalanches of 500-800 m length on the steep upper slopes.

No explosions were reported (which does not mean there were none, though...) from Santiaguito during the past days. The observatory reports a steam plume rising 400m and small incandescent avalanches from the lava dome's lava flows on the NE and SE flanks.

A strong SO2 plume from Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia was visible on NOAA's satellite image. At the moment, the seismogram shows some heightened activity as well, but there are no reports of an eruption.

A possible small ash emission from Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador was reported by VAAC Washington based on a pilot report at 14:16 GMT today. No ash is visible on satellite images, and the seismic signal is very quiet with only a few small volcanic earthquakes.

An ash cloud rising to 16,000 ft (5 km) was observed from Reventador volcano at 11:15 GMT today.
IG reports seeing incandescent blocks rolling down 400 m from the crater on the upper flanks, and a steam plume rising 1 km is visible during the day.

Little Sitkin volcano seems to have experienced another phase of elevated seismic activity today.

VAAC Darwin has not detected any new explosions from Batu Tara since 16 Sep, suggesting that activity has dropped.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan has been quieter the past days, with only a few relatively week explosions during 18-20 Sep.

Fuego volcano, Guatemala has increased its activity again. Strong strombolian explosions generated ash plumes rising up to 1 km and ejected blocks up to 200 m above the rim. Incandescent material rolled down the flanks for 500-1000 m and shock waves accompanied the explosions. ... [meer...]
