Volcanic activity world-wide 27 September 2012: El Hierro, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Reventador, Batu Tara, Nyiragongo, Sakurajima

Not much new volcano activity has occurred. Most volcanoes we regularly monitor have not shown significant changes.

Some interesting developments are perhaps taking place at El Hierro: The number of earthquakes remained elevated as now usual, but their location and depths are becoming more scattered with several quakes above M2 at about 15 km depth.
A further inflation of 2-3 cm has been detected in the southern part of the island during the past few days.

Popocatépetl had 5 weak explosions and tremor pulses registered between 26-27 Sep by CENAPRED. Satellite data show a strong SO2 plume.

Fuego volcano's activity remains stable. Strombolian bursts reach average heights of 75 - 150 meters above the crater and there were 14 explosions total observed by INSIVUMEH between 26-27 Sep with ash plumes of 500-800 m height above the crater.

Reventador volcano, Ecuador: Mostly the volcano is hidden in clouds and IG has no seismic data available, but last night, energetic steam emissions were observed, which suggests that there is ongoing mild explosive activity.

Satellite observations:
A strong SO2 plume from Nyiragongo (and possibly neighboring Nymuragira) is visible on satellite images.
Batu Tara produced its near daily ash plume at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude again today.
Sakurajima volcano has had only one, rarely two eruptions per day during the past days. Ash cloud altitudes are often around 3 km.

Tondano Lake is a large caldera lake in northern Sulawesi (Indonesia), best known as for its popular local recreation areas. Few know it is what is nowadays usually called a SUPERVOLCANO, similar to Yellowstone with a big difference: it is currently erupting. As Carl on VolcanoCafe in a brilliant article (s. below) points out, a single small earthquake at Yellowstone outperforms it in popularity.
Tondano has 4 active vents, the volcanoes Lokon-Empung, Mahawu, Sempu and Soputan, which frequently erupt and act as pressure relief valves for the large volcanic system. To read more, visit Did you notice the erupting Supervolcano? on VolcanoCafe.
