Glow from Popocatépetl's summit (CENAPRED webcam)Sangeang Api (Indonesia)
: An increase in seismicity since 26 April triggered VSI to rise the alert status from 2 to 3 on a scale of 1-4 (from "Waspada", "watch" to Siaga", alert). For the moment, only degassing has been observed as surface activity.
A similar increase in seismic activity was observed in Oct 2012, when the alert was raised as well and then reduced again in November.Popocatépetl (Central Mexico)
: Activity has been a bit calmer over the past 2 days, but the number of emissions and small explosions (about 3 per hour) remains elevated. Explosions ejected incandescent fragments to heights of 500 m above the crater. Strong glow is visible at the volcano's summit at night. Intermittent phases of volcanic tremor and volcanic earthquakes of magnitude up to 2.1 have been registered. The volcanic alert level remains at YELLOW Phase 3.

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy)
: Over the past days, Stromboli has returned to normal levels of activity with frequent, mostly small to medium-sized explosions and low to medium tremor. Small lava overflows and frequent rockfalls still occur. ...
Sunday, May 19, 2013
: The lava dome remains active and produces hot avalanches on the western and eastern flanks. KVERT reports moderate seismic activity, incandescence of the volcano summit and medium to strong degassing. ...

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan)
: It seems that the latest cycle of increased activity has ended: after several days of intense activity, culminating in larger explosions on 14 and 15 May, the volcano has been "taking a rest" lasting about 2 days. This morning, only a small explosion was recorded. ...

Pavlov (Alaska Peninsula, USA)
: The eruption continues. The volcano produces a lava flow on the northwest flank. Interaction of the lava flow and ice, producing debris flows, as well as possible explosions at the vent produce a steam-ash plume rising up to about 20,000 ft. above sea level. ...

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy)
: Activity has remained generally elevated and seems to have increased yesterday. Current seismic recordings show strong explosion signals and an increase in tremor. A small lava overflow is currently visible from the NE crater. ...

Introduction to Plate Tectonics
: The Earth's upper, rigid layer is broken into several plates which are in constant motion to one another. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur as result of these plate boundaries.
