Volcanic activity worldwide 28 Feb 2015: Colima volcano
Saturday Feb 28, 2015 23:00 PM |
Starry sky and large explosive eruption of Colima, photograph by Hernando Rivera.Colima (Western Mexico)
: Dr Tom Pfeiffer is part of a volcano filming expedition in Mexico at the moment. They have been observing Colima volcano over the past few days.
The effusive activity seems to have stopped since there is no more dome building nor lava flows. Explosive activity has taken over instead: Colima erupts in irregular explosions (at intervals of 30mins to 7 hours) of small to moderately large size, emitted from two different vents in summit crater. Ash plumes are rising to max 2-3km and bombs thrown into the air are estimated to travel up to 800m high and land laterally up to 1.5 km away from the vent. Such large eruptions can furthermore last up to 2 minutes.

: An eruption today produced an ash plume that rose to estimated 25,000 ft (7.5 km) altitude, detected on infrared satellite imagery (VAAC Tokyo). ...
Thursday, Feb 19, 2015
: The strombolian-type activity from the summit crater of the volcano continues at moderate levels, with little changes over the past week. ...

Chikurachki (Paramushir Island)
: Ash emissions and explosions of smaller size than the initial one on Sunday evening continue to occur. Ash plumes reported rose to 12-15,000 ft (3.6-4.5 km) altitude. ...

Bardarbunga (Central Iceland)
: The eruption at Holuhraun continues at similar levels as lately, the Icelandic Met Office reports in its updates. The decreasing trend, however, is becoming visible in a significant drop of the lava lake level inside the Baugur crater above the main vents, seen in the photo above. ...

Volcano Calendar 2017
: We're proud to present our 2017 volcano calendar: 13 different and attractive images of volcanoes, volcanic landscapes and phenomena taken during volcano tours over the past few years.
: A third tectonic setting where volcanism occurs is believed to be the result of mantle plumes and not directly related to plate boundaries. So called hot spot volcanoes fall into this category.
Top 20 quakes in 2016
: Several magnitude 7 quakes occurred in 2016 (but none above M8): Papua New Guinea, NZ, Ecuador, Solomon Islands, Sumatra, Chile, Alaska and others - nearly all major earthquakes were located near active subduction zones.
