Background
A group of Pleistocene andesitic stratovolcanoes lies between Lakes Rotoaira and Taupo and to the west, forming the northern end of the Tongariro volcanic center. The Rotopounamu graben, trending SW from Lake Taupo, cuts Pihanga volcano, and is these of several young cones and craters less than 20,000 years old (Cole et al. 1986).---
