Pacaya volcano (Guatemala): possibly new strombolian activity
Friday Nov 14, 2014 07:10 AM | BY: T
Current seismic signal (PCG station, INSIVUMEH)
It seems new strombolian explosive activity has started around 10-11 November from the Mackenney crater.
INSIVUMEH reported in its special bulletin that an increase in gas emissions as well as fine ash expulsions have been observed. Together, they form plumes reaching 3000 m altitude and drifting SW for approx. 7 km.
The seismic signal shows elevated activity as well. This could be the beginning of a new episode of strombolian activity, which in turn would slowly start building a new cone inside the Mackenney crater.
Tuesday, May 27, 2014
The volcano remains quiet. INSIVUMEH reports only a continuous degassing plume reaching about 50 m above the crater.
Friday, Apr 18, 2014
INSIVUMEH only reports steaming and internal tremor, but no visible eruptive activity from the Mackenney crater at the moment.
Thursday, Apr 10, 2014
Weak sporadic explosions have resumed at the Mackenney crater. Fine ash plume were observed rising to 2,6 km altitude and drifting approx. 1 km to the S and SW. The seismic signal shows continuous tremor and weak explosion signals.
Monday, Mar 10, 2014
According to INSIVUMEH, lava continues to flow from the vent (on the western base of the cone?), but is mostly inside small lava tubes. Strombolian activity at the summit vent seems to have decreased or ceased.
Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014
While lava flow effusions probably has stopped, weak and sometimes moderate strombolian explosions continue at the summit vent, producing small ash plumes rising 100-150 m.
