Excursion on Etna - climbing the summit craters (Oct. 07)

As part of our tour From Stromboli to Etna, we usually climb Etna's summit craters. In October, an early snowstorm had just passed before our tour, blanketing much of Etna's upper areas in a beautiful snow cover.

2900 m a.s.l. At the site of the former Torre del Filosofo mountain hut, now buried beneath the cinders from the violent eruption in 2002, the jeep road ends and we stand in front of the summit craters, Bocca Nuova and Voragine to the left and the Southeast crater on the right.  (c)

Etna's 300 m high South East crater has become Etna's most active vent in the past years. Today, there are some weak ash emissions on a vent on its lower eastern flank. (c)

The first half of the climb to Bocca Nuova is in the relatively flat area around the summit complex known as the Piano caldera (probably formed during a violend summit eruption in 122 BC). (c)
