Stromboli eruption 2007: a new vent is born

9 March: near continuous ash emissions are occuring from the partly collapsed summit craters, sometimes, blocks can be seen in the ash clouds. At around 15:30, this activity ceases and a spot on the Sciara at about 500 m elevation starts to emit white vapour and then bluish gas, and becomes a source of frequent rockfalls - the site of a new vent being born. Shortly after, a viscous lava flow emerges from that spot and starts to travel downhill slowly.

The lava flow from the 400 m vent, after the pause of the eruption on 8 March, has intensified and its front is now at 200 m elevation.
