Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy), June 2017: strong activity

During the first part of June, activity at Stromboli volcano was one of the most intense periods during several years. At most times, up to 6 or 7 vents were active, most notably the two eastern vents, closely followed and sometimes surpassed by the two western vents.
The following pictures were taken on 9, 11, and 16 June, from various viewpoints and give an idea of this activity.

Compared to a few days earlier (pictures from 11 June), the westernmost crater was less active and seemed to have deepened, perhaps as the magma column inside subsided a bit. As consequence, its upper conduit filled in with more sandy debris, causing its eruptions to generate more ash. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
