Lava fountain and lava flow from the new eruption of Piton de la Fournaise today
A new eruption started at the volcano this evening. Following a brief seismic crisis that triggered an eruption alarm, an eruptive fissure opened south of Dolomieu crater at 18:50 local time.
It is producing impressive lava fountains and a branching lava flow, which can be seen on the webcam of OVPF.
The prefecture of Reunion triggered the highest volcanic alert and closed public access to the Enclos,- only shortly after the limitations in place since the last eruption had partially been lifted...
The eruption is already the fourth in 2015 and follows the previous one (which lasted less than 3 days) after a pause of only 3 weeks; it might be fed by the same shallow magma reservoir. Until an eruption lasts long enough to significantly drain the volcano's shallow magma supply, a series of frequent, but short-lived eruptions can be expected from Piton de la Fournaise.

Sulfur dioxide gas emissions increased at 1600, and at 1711 the seismic and deformation network indicated a magmatic intrusion. Lava fountains were visible at 1850 from a fissure on the S flank of Dolomieu Crater, at about 2000 m elevation, near Rivals Crater. ... Read all
