The eruption continues into its second month,- for Piton de La Fournaise's standards this is an unusually long-lived one. Accompanied by stable tremor, effusive activity remains strong and feeds a growing lava flow field that slowly expands towards the east in direction of the Grandes Pentes.
New surface lava flow from Piton de la Fournaise last night
At the site of the main vent near Piton Rivals, a cone with a small lava lake has formed. From there, the lava flows for a large part of its path through lava tubes that then feed several flow branches further downslope. Occasionally, when parts of the tube system becomes blocked or unstable, new surface flows develop near the vent, such as last night when a new surface flow appeared that began flowing to the southeast.

The eruption continues at weak intensity. As of yesterday, only one vent, a cone about 20 m high, remained active producing pulsating fountain-like strombolian explosions of bursting lava bubbles that reach 15-20 m height. read all

The eruption that began last Monday continues. Lava output is much lower now (approx 10 cubic meters / second) than in the beginning (30 cu m/s), but more or less stable. read all

The eruption that started yesterday continues, but only one of several fissures (east of the Rivals crater), that opened last night remains active over a length of 100 m. A small cone has been built at its upper end, approx. 140 m east of Rivals crater. Strombolian activity occurs from this vent, while 3 other vents lower on the fissure continue to produce lava fountains and feed a lava flow that slowly advances towards the Grandes Pentes. ... read all
