A new eruption, the 5th in 2019 so far, started today at 14:40, following a seismic crisis that had started at 04:15 in the morning, heralding the final ascent of magma to the surface.
Two eruptive fissures opened relatively low at 1400 m altitude, about 1 km north of the Piton Tremblet, which formed during the large flank eruption in 2007.
At least two lava flows were issued from the fissures, the most active of which had reached an area below Piton Tremblet by 17:00 local time. Part of the lava flows over vegetated land, where bush fires started. Fire fighting aircraft are used to fight the flames.
Eruptions so far downslope often have the potential to cut the coastal road and reach the sea. It will depend on the strength of the eruption (i.e. the output rate and volume) whether this scenario will take place.
The eruption was expected after an increase of seismic activity had been noted during the past days.

The eruption on the volcano continues into its 3rd day. Differently from the last short-lived last July, it seems this time it is well-fed and much more intense: lava flows have already reached considerable distance and were only about 2 km away from the coastal road when volcanologists from the observatory (OVPF) could undertake an aerial survey earlier today. ...
