Background:

The Pitons de Carbets volcanic complex SE of Montagne Pelée, was active during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. The early edifice was cut by a major flank-collapse leaving a breached caldera open to the west, inside which a group of lava domes known as the Pitons were constructed.
