A small steam emission from Popocatépetl yesterday
Activity has been low with less than 1 emission per day and no recent explosions.

Small explosion at Popocatépetl yesterday morning (CENAPRED)
A small explosion occurred yesterday morning, ejecting glowing material to up to 600 m distance from the crater. Otherwise, the activity at the volcano has been low, similar to previous weeks.

SO2 plume from Popocatépetl yesterday (NOAA)
Activity at the volcano remains low and mainly characterized by intense, continuous degassing. Bright glow is visible above the crater at night. No explosions occurred during the past 24 hours.
Wed, 5 Mar 2014, 06:00CENEPRED reported that incandescence from Popocatépetl's crater was visible at night during 5-11 March, and steam-and gas emissions visible during the day drifted E, NE, and NW. An explosion at 0334 on 6 March ejected material 600 m onto the flanks. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, Phase Two.

The new lava dome, about 20-30 m wide, inside Popocatépetl's crater
Current activity at the volcano is low with only occasional small puffs of ash. CENAPRED published an aerial picture showing the new (so far very small) lava dome in the crater.

The volcano's activity increased yesterday. CENAPRED counted no less than 544 small to moderate emissions during the 24 hours between 25-26 Feb.

On 26 February CENAPRED reported that, with support from the Navy, scientists aboard an overflight of Popocatépetl observed that lava dome 48 had been destroyed, leaving a funnel-shaped cavity about 80 m deep. A new dome 20-30 m wide was at the bottom of the cavity. On 27 February activity decreased considerably.

Small explosion at Popocatépetl yesterday (CENAPRED)
Activity at the volcano has remained unchanged and is currently low. The number of explosive emissions of generally weak size is typically less than 10 per day. SO2 emissions remain elevated and glow at night is visible as a further indicator that magma continues to rise slowly to the crater.

SO2 plume from Popocatépetl yesterday (NOAA)
Wed, 19 Feb 2014, 06:00
CENAPRED reported that at 0944 on 19 February a gas-and-vapor plume containing moderate amounts of ash rose 1.5 km above Popocatépetl's crater and drifted NE and SW. At 2338 a gas-and-vapor plume containing small amounts of ash rose 1 km and drifted E. A small explosion at 0409 on 21 February ejected incandescent tephra which mostly fell back inside the crater, and produced an ash plume that rose 2 km.

Aerial view of Popocatépetl's summit crater (image: CENAPRED)
No significant changes in the currently low activity of the volcano have occurred recently. The volcano produces a small number (less than 10 usually) weak explosive emissions of steam, gas and sometimes ash on a daily basis, and magma continues to rise slowly to the summit where a lava dome forms. This is evidenced by glow at night, and was confirmed during a recent overfly with the support of the Mexican Navy.

Glow from Popocatépetl's crater at night
Activity at the volcano has remained unchanged and weak. Only few (less than 10 per day) and generally weak emissions of steam, gas and minor amounts of ash have been recorded. Weak glow is visible at the crater at night.

Small eruption from Popocatépetl yesterday
The volcano remains at low activity levels with little changes. CEAPRED reported 2 low-intensity emissions of steam and gas during yesterday, and 2 small explosions that produced minor amounts of ash with the largest yesterday morning at 10:28 (local time) producing a plume reaching 1000 m. Crater glow at night is visible.
Fri, 17 Jan 2014, 08:11
The volcano's activity, essentially unchanged over the past weeks, has returned to very low levels, with usually less than 5 weak explosive emissions per day. Crater glow remains visible at night, indicating continuing slow lava extrusion.

Small ash emission from Popocatépetl yesterday
Activity at the volcano has increased a bit. The number of steam/gas/sometimes ash emissions rose to 11 (from averages of 2-3). The strongest explosions produced small ash plumes rising up to approx 1 km yesterday. CENAPRED also recorded a small volcano-tectonic earthquake of magnitude 2.3 yesterday.

Glow from Popocatépetl at night
Volcanic activity remains low. CENAPRED only counts few (2-5) weak explosive emissions per day. Glow and continuous degassing still indicate that magma is being supplied to the crater, and justify the continued alert level Yellow Phase 2.
