Explosion at Popocatépetl this morning (CENAPRED webcam)
Sunday, Aug 14, 2016
The volcano's activity has been essentially unchanged over the past week. On average, 2-4 explosions have been occurring daily - mostly small events with plumes less than 1 km tall - and about 50-100 pulses of steam emissions ("exhalations"). ... [more]
Strombolian eruption from Popo during the night 31 July - 1 Aug 2016
Monday, Aug 01, 2016
A peak of activity occurred during 31 July - 1 Aug, generating frequent and strong strombolian explosions that sent many glowing bombs outside the crater and generated an ash plume that reached 6000 m altitude and drifted northwest, causing ash falls in downwind areas such as Ozumba town on the western slope of the volcanic massif. ... [more]
Small ash emission from Popo this morning (CENAPRED webcam)
Monday, Jul 25, 2016
The activity at the volcano has remained essentially unchanged and been rather low during the past week. On average, CENAPRED recorded 100-200 low-energy emissions ("exhalations") and few, generally weak explosions with ash emissions, accompanied by intermittent phases of weak tremor. ... [more]
Ash emissions from Popocatépetl Sunday morning (Webcams de Mexico webcam)
Tuesday, Jul 12, 2016
The activity at the volcano remains essentially unchanged and CENAPRED maintains alert level "Yellow Phase 2". As magma continues to slowly rise inside the conduit, it accumulates in the inner summit crater as a flat pancake-shaped dome and causes small to moderate intermittent explosions with more or less ash. ... Mushroom cloud from Popocatépetl volcano yesterday (CENAPRED webcam)
Monday, Jun 13, 2016
A moderately strong vulcanian explosion occurred yesterday morning at 11:17 local time, producing a mushroom-shaped ash plume that rose approx. 3 km above the summit and dispersed in westerly directions. ... [more]

Background:

Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano.  The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater.  The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano.  The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone.  Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano.  Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
