Raung volcano (East Java, Indonesia): strombolian eruption intensifies, ash plumes
Sunday Jul 05, 2015 10:08 AM | BY: T
The effusive-explosive activity at the volcano continued and increased over the past week. Strombolian explosions accompany a lava flow emitted from a vent inside the large summit crater.
Some of the explosions were strong enough to produce significant but low-level ash plumes drifting east. Some airlines canceled flights to Surabaya and Bali that would pass near or in the paths of the plumes.
The alert level was raised to 3("Siaga") on a scale of 1-4 and some nearby villages have been evacuated.

Eruptive activity continues in the volcano's summit crater. Heat emission remains intense, suggesting the presence of lava (flow?), likely in combination with more or less intense strombolian activity. ...

PVMBG reported that, during infrequent times of clear weather during February-21 May 2014, gray and gray-to-brown plumes were observed rising as high as 300 m above Raung's crater rim. Rumbling was frequently heard at the observation post. Crater incandescence was observed during February and on 12 April. ...
