Redoubt volcano (Alaska), activity update: large eruption on 26 March 2009: plume to 60-65,000 ft (20-25km)

A major eruption of sub-plinian to plinian type took place at Redoubt this morning, sending an ash plume to more than 60,000 ft altitude (>20km), as AVO reports. The eruption, by far the largest in its new cycle of activity so far, started at 09:24 am local time, following a few days with lower activity after the powerful explosions on March 22-23.

On 25 February, a small mud flow traveled several hundred meters. Web camera views and satellite imagery showed no unusual activity. Steam plumes were seen on the web camera on 26 and 1 March. [more]

It is reported that there is a whole which hot steam comming out. The glaciers have started to melt down. A near erupion is possible. The last eruption of Redoubt volcano took place in 1989. [more]
