Mt. Thorbjorn volcano (Reykjanes peninsula, Iceland) activity update: strong earthquake detected

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) recorded an earthquake with magnitude M 5.2 occurred about 5 km NE of Grindavík. Multiple aftershocks have been detected. The earthquake is the largest earthquake detected on the Reykjanes peninsula since October 2013 when an earthquake of magnitude M 5.2 occurred close to Reykjanestá. The earthquake was felt in large areas of SW-Iceland.

Additionally recorded two earthquakes at 18:40 local time with magnitude M 3.4 and at 18:42 local time with magnitude M 3.3 about 3km ENE of Grindavík.

On 18 March IMO raised the Aviation Color Code for Reykjanes to Yellow noting that recent InSAR and GPS data indicated that during the second week of March deformation had restarted.
