OVSICORI-UNA reported that on 3 September geologists observed Rincón de la Vieja from the summit and noted that the acid lake in the main crater had a low water level, was actively convecting, and exhibited strong gas emissions. The temperature of the lake was 60 degrees Celsius. Vigorous fumaroles on the inner W wall of the crater were 120 degrees Celsius.
At 0559 on 8 September an eruption produced a plume that rose 500 m above the crater rim.
