Strombolian activity from Barujari cone, Rinjani volcano (image: Apink Alkaf / facebook)The new eruption continues with intense strombolian activity and lava effusion from the Barujari intra-caldera cone. Associated ash emissions have been a bit less intense during the past days, although still reached up to 100-200 km length.
After having been closed for two days, Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport had resumed operations from Thursday at 12:30 local time and flight disruptions due to the ash plume have been limited to individual flight cancellations.

The eruption of the volcano continues to produce intense ash emissions. However, to the great relief of travelers to and from Bali, the strong easterly winds that had swept the plume over Bali during the past days, forcing the Denpasar International airport to shut down, have ceased and given way to weak southerly and northerly winds, thus allowing the airport to reopen. ... The eruption has intensified a lot over the past few days. Activity takes place from a lateral vent on the Barujari cone inside the volcano's caldera, producing continuous ash emissions and feeding a new viscous lava flow. The activity that had started a week ago continues. Explosions continue to produce small ash plumes from vents on the upper flank of the Barujari cinder cone inside the volcano's caldera. [more]

A small explosive eruption with ash emissions was reported from the volcano this morning. It seems to have occurred from the Baru Jari cone inside the caldera lake (and the site of all recent eruptions of the volcano) at around 10:45 local time. ... [more]

Rinjani volcano erupted again on Saturday and Sunday (22-23 May, 2010), sending ash to up to 2 km height and causing ash falls in surrounding villages. New reports mention lava flows from the active Baru Jari cone inside the Rinjani caldera into the lake. No fatalities or major damage were reported. [more]
