Rinjani volcano (Lombok Island, Indonesia): explosive eruption, ash plume triggers closure of Lombok airport

Today's ash plume from Rinjani volcano in Indonesia
The volcano had a sudden explosive eruption this noon, it seems. An ash plume was detected at 12:20 local time (04:20 UTC) that rose from the volcano to originally estimated 32,000 ft (10 km) altitude and drifted south.

Lombok's Praya Airport was closed today from 16:55 and is expected to reopen tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.
It seems likely that the ash plume, which appears not particularly dense and smaller than originally reported by Darwin VAAC, was the result of a sudden explosive event (perhaps phreatic) of the volcano whose last eruption was last year between Oct-Dec. Other causes of the ash plume are possible, too, e.g. a major collapse event inside the caldera. More details will be added as they come in.
News reported several flights between Australia and Bali were cancelled as a precaution (incl. 3 Tigerair and 2 Virgin Airlines flights), although Bali's airport was this time spared from the ash cloud.
In 2015, hundreds of flights were canceled in or out of Bali due to the eruption of Raung volcano in East Java, and, to a lesser extent, the later eruption of Mt Rinjani.

The volcano continues to erupt, but activity has decreased a lot. When visited during 30 Nov - 2 Dec, "the volcano erupted just 2-3 times eruption per day", but some explosions were fairly big (s. image attached). [more]

The eruption continues with no significant change. When observed yesterday on location, the Barujari cone was in violent strombolian activity and the lava flow was still weakly alimented, creating a small steam plume at the lake entry of the flow. ... [more]

The eruption continues. Ash emissions have decreased recently, with column heights ranging between a few hundred to 2000 meters. On the other hand, mild to moderate strombolian activity from the Barujari cone and the effusion of a new lava flow have been stable and seem to be going on strongly. ... [more]
